Acknowledgement vs.
Jurat

An acknowledgment is a method of authenticating a signature on a document. It is a declaration made in a notary’s presence by an individual who signed a document. The individual appears in person to declare that he or she did, in fact, sign the document and knew what he or she was doing at the time, thereby authenticating the signature.

A jurat is a statement made by a person before a notary public attesting to the fact that they have sworn or affirmed to the truth of certain information contained in a document. This statement typically includes the date and location at which the oath or affirmation was made, as well as the signature of the person making it.

The key difference between a jurat and an acknowledgment is that a jurat is used primarily when dealing with sworn statements.  An acknowledgement applies to documents that must be signed in front of an unbiased independent witness (a notary).
